Open RAN Use Cases

Open RAN use cases include managing mobile handoff, network connection optimization, traffic steering, and resource sharing.

Open RAN is a standardization movement for radio access networks (RANs), fully intent on making industry standard connection points accessible for anybody to utilize.

Major standards bodies are O-RAN Alliance and the Telecom Infra Project.

RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC)

RIC is the brain of O-RAN solution. The RIC is similar to any network controller as  it interfaces the application layer to the framework layer.

The application layer contains virtual network functions (VNFs) that operate as software and run on the controller. The infrastructure layer,

on the other hand, contains the actual radios. The applications establish policies that the controller enforces on the radios via a southbound interface

The controller is based on open standard and it provide so many benefits for the operator like remove vendor lock in, reduce OPEX and enable faster innovations.
